Can You Delete PhonePe History? What’s Actually Possible

PhonePe transaction history cannot be deleted, and the law explains why. What you can actually remove, and how to export a statement instead.

Can You Delete PhonePe History? What’s Actually Possible

Can You Delete PhonePe Transaction History?

No. PhonePe transaction history cannot be deleted, and this is not a missing feature — it is a legal requirement. Payment providers in India are required to retain transaction records for years, so there is no button to remove them and there will not be one.

What you can do is delete your PhonePe account, remove saved payment methods, and download a statement for your own records. If your concern is someone else seeing your transactions on your phone, device-level protection is the practical answer rather than anything inside the app.

This article explains what is actually possible, what the law requires, and why most other pages on this subject are wrong.

Why the record cannot be deleted

Two separate legal obligations apply, and together they explain the whole situation.

Reserve Bank of India rules on prepaid payment instruments. The RBI’s Master Directions on Prepaid Payment Instruments require that a payment instrument issuer “shall maintain a log of all the transactions undertaken using the PPIs for at least ten years.” That is a retention floor, not a ceiling, and it binds the provider rather than the customer.

The Prevention of Money-Laundering Act 2002. Section 12 requires transaction records to be kept for five years from the date of the transaction, and client identity and account records for five years after the business relationship ends or the account is closed — whichever is later.

That second point matters more than it first appears. The five-year clock on your identity records starts when your account closes. So deleting your PhonePe account does not shorten how long your data is held. It starts the countdown.

One clarification, because precision matters here. The ten-year rule binds PhonePe specifically in its capacity as a prepaid instrument issuer. PhonePe also operates as a UPI application, where records additionally sit with the sponsor bank and the national payments infrastructure. The practical outcome is the same — the record exists outside your control either way — but the accurate statement is that statutory retention runs from five to ten years depending on the instrument, rather than that all UPI history is kept for ten years.

PhonePe’s own privacy policy reflects this. Deletion requests go through the app’s Help section, but retention “will be subject to applicable laws,” and may be extended where necessary to prevent fraud or future abuse, or where required by law.

The “hide transaction” advice you have probably read is wrong

This is worth addressing directly, because it appears on nearly every page ranking for this query.

Several articles describe a PhonePe feature that lets you hide individual transactions, and give step-by-step instructions for it. That feature belongs to Paytm, not PhonePe. Paytm introduced a Hide Payment feature in May 2025, where hidden transactions are masked rather than deleted and can be unhidden at any time. Reporting at the time noted no equivalent in PhonePe or Google Pay.

We found no official evidence that PhonePe has a comparable feature. If you have been following instructions for it and cannot find the option, that is why.

Similarly, we could not verify from official sources that PhonePe offers deletion of individual transactions, clearing of a recent contacts list, or any bulk “clear history” function. Step sequences for these circulate widely and should be treated as unreliable.

What you can actually do

Delete your PhonePe account

The one genuinely available option that removes your access to the history. PhonePe’s privacy policy names the app’s Help section as the route for deletion requests.

What this does: removes your access to the account and its transaction view.

What it does not do: erase the transaction records, which are retained under the obligations described above. And it starts the five-year clock on your identity records rather than ending it.

Before deleting, download a statement if you may need the records — for tax, expenses, or a dispute. Once access is gone, getting it back means going through support.

Remove saved payment methods

You can unlink bank accounts and remove saved UPI IDs and cards through the app’s payment settings. This is standard UPI deregistration and is genuinely available.

This stops future transactions through those instruments. It does not affect past records.

Clear the app cache

Through your phone’s settings — on Android, Settings → Apps → PhonePe → Storage, then clear cache. This is an operating system function rather than a PhonePe feature.

Be clear about what this achieves: nothing on the server side. Your history reappears as soon as the app reloads.

Uninstall the app

Cosmetic only. Reinstall and log in, and the full history is there again. It is stored on PhonePe’s servers, not on your phone.

If your real concern is privacy on your device

Most people asking this question are not worried about PhonePe’s servers. They are worried about someone picking up their phone. That is a solvable problem, just not through transaction deletion.

Lock the app. PhonePe supports app-level security, and Android and iOS both offer app locking or hiding through device settings or a secure folder. This is the single most effective step.

Secure the phone itself. A strong screen lock with biometrics does more for your privacy than anything inside the app.

Turn off transaction notification previews. Payment alerts that show amounts and recipient names on the lock screen are how most people are seen accidentally. Turn off notification content previews for the app in your device settings.

Check who has access to your linked email and SMS. Transaction confirmations arrive there too, and a shared or unlocked account undoes everything else.

How to get a statement instead

If what you need is a record rather than its removal, you can export one.

For merchant accounts, PhonePe documents the process on PhonePe Business on the web: log in with your registered mobile number, enter the OTP, go to Transactions, then Reports, choose a date range, select the status and instrument filters, and generate the report.

For consumer accounts, a statement or passbook export exists in the app, but we could not locate official documentation for the exact procedure, so treat any step sequence you find — including any you might expect here — as unverified until you have confirmed it in the app.

A statement is useful for tax filing, expense claims, loan applications, and disputes. Downloading one before deleting an account is worth the two minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete my PhonePe transaction history? No. Payment providers in India are legally required to retain transaction records — at least ten years under RBI rules for prepaid payment instruments, and five years under the Prevention of Money-Laundering Act. There is no feature to delete them.

Can I hide transactions in PhonePe? There is no verified hide-transaction feature in PhonePe. The feature described in many articles is Paytm’s, introduced in May 2025, where transactions are masked rather than deleted. PhonePe has no confirmed equivalent.

What happens to my data if I delete my PhonePe account? Your access to the account and its history ends, but the records are retained under legal obligations. Note that under the Prevention of Money-Laundering Act, the five-year retention period for identity records begins when the account closes — so deleting the account starts the clock rather than ending it.

Does uninstalling PhonePe delete my history? No. History is stored on PhonePe’s servers, not on your phone. Reinstall and log in and it is all there again. Clearing the app cache has the same non-effect.

How can I stop people seeing my PhonePe transactions? Secure the device rather than the record. Use app locking, a strong screen lock with biometrics, and turn off notification content previews so amounts and names do not appear on your lock screen.

Can I delete individual transactions in PhonePe? No verified method exists. Step-by-step instructions for this circulate widely but could not be confirmed against official sources, and the legal retention requirements make individual deletion implausible.

How do I download a PhonePe statement? For merchant accounts, log in to PhonePe Business on the web, go to Transactions → Reports, set a date range and filters, and generate the report. For consumer accounts an in-app statement export exists, but the exact path should be confirmed in the current app version.

Why does PhonePe keep my transaction history? Because the law requires it. RBI Master Directions require a transaction log for at least ten years for prepaid payment instruments, and the Prevention of Money-Laundering Act requires five years for transaction records. These exist to support fraud investigation and anti-money-laundering enforcement.

Can I delete my UPI transaction history? No, for the same reasons. UPI transactions are recorded by your payment app, your bank, the sponsor bank, and the national payments infrastructure. No single app could remove a record held in several places by legal obligation.

Is PhonePe available outside India? It operates as an Indian service. Its only international function is outbound UPI payments for Indian travelers in a small number of countries. If you are outside India, PhonePe is not a service you can meaningfully use.
